"The transfer process was really straightforward. Working for Nexus is like having a different job because we get such great support. How the Transfer Process works

Transferring is more straightforward than you might think, even if you’re currently fostering children. Stability for the children in your care is always a top priority.

We follow the Fostering Transfer Protocol, which sets out a clear process for moving between agencies. Here’s what you can expect:

Step 1 - Confidential Chat

We begin with an informal, confidential conversation to understand your current situation and experience. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, talk through your reasons for considering a transfer, and gain a clear understanding of how the process works with us. Everything discussed is handled sensitively and without obligation.

Step 2 - Home Visit and Review

We will arrange a home visit to meet you in person and learn more about your fostering experience. This allows us to understand your skills, circumstances, and current approval status. We will also talk through the support available to you during the transfer process, including any tailored guidance you may need along the way.

Step 3 - Assessment process

The assessment process for transferring carers is designed to be streamlined, supporting a smooth and efficient transition. While we aim to progress applications within a 12-week period, timescales may vary depending on individual circumstances, and we may occasionally request additional information or clarification to ensure all areas are fully up to date.

As part of the assessment, we will review your previous Form F (where available) and use existing information wherever appropriate to reduce duplication. You will also be asked to provide updated references, medical checks, and new DBS checks to ensure all information remains current and meets regulatory standards.

Our team will support you throughout the process, ensuring your transfer is managed efficiently and with care.

Step 4 - Transfer Protocol Meeting

Early in the process, a Transfer Protocol Meeting will take place between all relevant parties. This meeting helps to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption for the children in your care. It also provides clarity around timelines, expectations, and ensures that allowances and key services remain consistent wherever possible.

Step 4 - Panel and Approval

Once your assessment is complete, your application will be presented to our fostering panel for consideration. The panel will review all information and make a recommendation regarding your approval. Following panel approval, your transfer to Nexus Fostering will be formally confirmed.

Step 6 - Welcome and Ongoing Support

From the moment you join us, we will ensure you feel fully supported in your new fostering journey. You will be introduced to your supervising social worker and local team, who will provide ongoing guidance, training opportunities, and practical support. Our focus is on ensuring a smooth transition with no disruption to your fostering role or the children in your care.

QA On Fostering

Common Questions

Yes, absolutely. As a foster carer, you have the right to choose which agency you foster with. If you feel that another agency might be a better fit for you, you are free to explore your options.

At Nexus Fostering, we make the transfer process as smooth and straightforward as possible. Our friendly team will guide you through every step and ensure that any children currently in your care continue to receive consistent and stable support.

Your skills and experience as a foster carer are highly valued, and we’ll work closely with you to make sure you feel confident and supported throughout the transition.

Stability for the children in care is, of course, a highly important factor. There is a set fostering transfer which we follow as best practice. If you are currently fostering children at the time you transfer foster agency, a fostering transfer protocol meeting will be arranged. You can read more about the Fostering Transfer Protocol here.

Carers who have already completed mandatory training and the Training, Support and Development (TSD) Standards portfolio may not need to repeat these, provided they can supply evidence of completion.

However, newly approved carers or those with gaps in their previous training may be required to complete additional courses to ensure all current standards and requirements are fully met.

We work to a clear 12-week timescale for transferring foster carers, allowing enough time to complete the updated Form F assessment. Our team will support you throughout this process, keeping everything on track and ensuring your transfer is handled efficiently and with care.

After the transfer protocol meeting, an agreement will be made for any children in your care to transfer with you. You will keep the same payment, expenses, and services for the whole placement, plus you'll get the extra benefits of being a Nexus foster carer.

Yes, you can. Foster carers can transfer from a Local Authority to an independent fostering agency like Nexus Fostering. Many carers make this change for the additional support, training, and sense of community we provide.

If you currently have a child in placement, we’ll work closely with your Local Authority to make sure there’s a smooth transition and no disruption to the care you’re providing. Our team will guide you through each step, ensuring the process is handled with sensitivity and professionalism.

That’s completely fine. Speaking with us doesn’t commit you to transferring. We understand that deciding to move agencies is a big step, and it’s important you feel confident it’s the right choice for you.

Our initial conversations are simply an opportunity for you to learn more about Nexus Fostering, ask questions, and see if we’re a good fit. If you decide not to continue, there’s absolutely no obligation or pressure to go further.

Your enquiry is completely confidential. When you get in touch with Nexus Fostering to find out more about transferring, we won’t contact your current agency or Local Authority without your permission.

Our conversations are simply to help you understand what’s involved and to answer any questions you may have. You’re free to explore your options in confidence, knowing that nothing will be shared until you decide you’re ready to move forward.

Yes, as part of the transfer process, we’ll complete an updated Form F assessment. This ensures that all your information, experience, and training are current and accurately reflect your fostering journey so far.

We understand that you’ll already have gone through this process before, so our team will make it as straightforward as possible. We’ll use your existing Form F as a starting point and focus on updating the necessary sections, saving you time while ensuring everything meets regulatory requirements.

Simply get in touch with one of our fostering advisors today by either calling or filling out the form here.
