In September 2025, our young ambassadors came together in Northamptonshire for a fantastic day of outdoor activities, conservation, and team building at Twywell Hills & Dales Country Park, managed by local charity Groundwork Northamptonshire.
These special days are a highlight of the year for our young ambassadors, who are living with foster carers with Nexus Fostering. Since they are based all across the UK, opportunities to meet face-to-face are rare, but always inspiring.
The adventure began with foraging for natural materials to build a bug hotel, helping to support local pollinators and biodiversity.
After a pitstop for freshly made wood-fired pizzas cooked in the outdoor oven, the group enjoyed a guided tour of the park.
A highlight of the afternoon was meeting Twywell’s much-loved Highland cows, guided by Ranger Twywell, before the children rounded off the day with their very own mini Highland cow toy and certificate to take home, a special keepsake from a day full of teamwork and laughter.
Vanessa Higham, Head of Participation at Nexus Fostering, said:
“Our Young Ambassadors only get together once or twice a year face to face as they are spread across the country, so it was lovely to see them working as part of a team, supporting and encouraging each other in the fresh air. What shone through was their sense of empowerment – one of our young people travelled four hours to get to this day and told us it was so worth it. They really took ownership and got stuck in. Even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits.”
Kimberley Lawson, Operations Director at Groundwork Northamptonshire, added:
“We were delighted to welcome the Nexus Fostering Young Ambassadors to Twywell Hills & Dales. It’s inspiring to see young people who want to give back to their community, and we’re proud to provide a space where they can connect with nature, learn new skills, and work together as a team. Days like this remind us why community spaces like Twywell are so important.”
Northamptonshire continues to see a growing demand for foster carers. As of August 2024, there were around 1,195 children in care and 925 care leavers in the county, but there is currently a shortfall of at least 140 foster carers.
At Nexus Fostering, we provide dedicated support, training, and guidance to foster carers across Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Hertfordshire. We are proud to be rated Outstanding by Ofsted and are always seeking new foster carers to join our community.
Twywell Hills & Dales is just one of the many community spaces managed by Groundwork Northamptonshire, a local charity passionate about conservation, education, and bringing people together. The organisation also runs The Green Patch community garden in Kettering, as well as a variety of volunteering opportunities and corporate team days across the county.
It was truly heart warming to see our Young Ambassadors embracing the challenges of the day, learning new skills, and building friendships. At Nexus Fostering, we are so proud of everything they continue to achieve. A huge thank you to everyone at Groundwork Northamptonshire for helping us create such a memorable day.
