Pam and Leanne from our Cambridge office had the pleasure of welcoming Bill from Boomerang Radio into the office to record an important interview highlighting the need for foster carers in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk & Suffolk.
The local radio feature is part of Nexus Fostering’s ongoing mission to encourage more people to consider fostering and help provide safe, stable homes for children and young people in care.
During the broadcast, Nexus Fostering spoke directly to listeners about the growing demand for fostering in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk, where many children are currently waiting for loving homes.
Area Manager Pam shared:
“The need for foster carers has always been there, but now there are not enough people coming forward to meet demand, as the number of children entering care is increasing significantly every year.”
With a shortage of foster carers, some children are being placed outside their local communities—away from their schools, friends and support networks.
Leanne explained some of the reasons children may enter foster care:
“Sometimes families struggle to meet their child’s needs. This can be due to ill health, mental health challenges, criminal behaviour within the home, or children experiencing neglect or abuse.”
We are receiving a staggering number of referrals for teenagers, sibling groups, and parent and child arrangements. We urgently need foster carers who can help keep siblings together, support teenagers during a vital stage of their lives, and nurture relationships between parents and their children.
Pam added:
“We promote a strong sense of family with our foster carers. We work together, and we truly care about both our carers and the children they support. We understand how emotional fostering can be, and we recognise that.”
The radio interview helped to:
Highlight the urgent need for foster carers in East Anglia
Educate listeners about how fostering works
Break down common myths about who can foster
Encourage people to take the first step and enquire
Pam also reassured listeners about the level of support available:
“The support is over and above what people might expect, and we are there for our carers 24/7.”
Leanne spoke about who can foster, saying:
“We’re not looking for people with fancy qualifications—just people over 21 who have a spare bedroom and the time and commitment to help a child.”
You don’t need to be married, own your home, or have had your own children.
What matters most is:
Time, patience and commitment
A genuine desire to make a difference
A spare bedroom for a child
By becoming a foster carer in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk or Suffolk, you can support a child’s future while making a meaningful difference in your local community.
