Teaching them life skills is why we love fostering - Damian and Graham

Damian And Graham Foster Carers

Graham and Damian have been fostering with Nexus Fostering for five years and are advocates of therapeutic-led fostering. “From the beginning, it became clear Nexus Fostering had a strong, caring ethos, and it felt like we were joining a family,” says Graham. “Having an outstanding OFSTED rating made the decision easy.”

Therapeutic fostering

Damian says, “we have embraced the therapeutic parenting models and theories, and the outcome has been successful. However, its ways of parenting can seem alien and counterproductive. There are no easy fixes. Not everything works, but be persistent, consistent, and trust the process.” Graham continues, “you’re not alone. The team around you all work towards the same goal. Their communication is excellent. They support the child or young person and you and your family.”

The highs and lows

“You will not always be their friend,” says Graham. “Changing behaviours is always challenging, and it doesn’t happen overnight. However, seeing the positive changes makes it worth it. It makes your relationship with the child or young person stronger. Teaching them life skills and sharing their milestones is why we love fostering.”

Nexus Fostering’s therapeutic-led fostering packages include up to five hours of weekly outreach for each child and young person, fortnightly therapeutic support for carers, and support from an Education Liaison officer.
