How do foster carers get ready for a child moving in with them?

At Nexus Fostering, we understand that welcoming a child into your home is a life-changing moment, not just for the child, but for the foster carers too. It’s an act of love, preparation, and hope. Behind every child is a family getting ready to offer safety, stability, and care.

One of our incredible foster carers recently shared a card they wrote for a child arriving at their home. It beautifully captures the heart of fostering:

“Welcome to your new home and welcome to our family. We have been so excited to meet you and to be part of your life journey. We are here to support and guide you, and help you be the happiest and healthiest you.”

So, how do foster carers prepare for such an important moment? Here’s what goes into getting ready for a new child to move in.

Preparing the home

Creating a welcoming space is a key part of helping a child feel safe and secure. Foster carers take time to:

-Set up a warm, personalised bedroom, with age-appropriate bedding, toys, books, and storage.

-Add comforting touches – like nightlights, posters, or a welcome gift.

-Childproof the home if needed, especially for younger children.

- Stock the kitchen with favourite snacks or comfort foods (if known in advance).

- The goal is to make sure the child feels thought about — even before they arrive.

Getting emotionally ready

Every child is unique. They bring their own experiences, worries, and strengths. Foster carers take time to prepare emotionally too:

-Learning about the child’s background and needs from the supervising social worker.

-Talking as a household (if applicable) about how to support the child and create a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

-Practising patience and empathy, especially during the early days.

Practical planning

There are also some practical steps foster carers take:

-Registering the child with a GP, dentist, and school (if necessary).

-Preparing important items like clothes, toiletries, and school supplies.

-Reviewing support plans, routines, and expectations in collaboration with the Nexus team.

The power of a warm welcome

For many children entering care, it’s an emotional and uncertain time. A small gesture, like a handwritten card, a new teddy, or simply a smile, can have a huge impact.

That’s why the card shared above is so powerful. It sets the tone: you’re wanted here, and you belong.

Support every step of the way

At Nexus Fostering, we support our carers every step of the journey, from preparing for a child’s arrival to helping build long-term, meaningful placements. We provide 24/7 support, regular training, and a dedicated social worker, so you’re never alone.

Whether you're considering fostering or are preparing for your next placement, know that every small step you take makes a big difference to a child’s life.
