Balancing fostering and work with Nexus Fostering

Julie discusses balancing fostering and work with Nexus Fostering

Balancing fostering and work with Nexus Fostering

At Nexus Fostering, we’re proud to be a Fostering Friendly employer, and few people understand the value of that more than our own team members who are also foster carers. We recently chatted with Julie, our Deputy Family Matching Manager, to talk about what it’s like to balance working at Nexus with fostering, and how a supportive workplace can make all the difference when fostering.

A passion that started before Nexus

“For me, fostering came first,” Julie shared. “It was something we wanted to do for a long time, and we were officially approved as foster carers in 2015. That experience really sparked my passion for fostering and ultimately led me to want to work in the sector in a professional capacity.”

Julie joined Nexus in 2019, already bringing with her the valuable perspective of a foster carer. “We discussed my fostering background during my interview. It felt like a natural fit to join an organisation that shares my commitment to making a difference in children’s lives.”

Support every step of the way

Juggling work and fostering isn’t always easy, but having a supportive employer makes all the difference. “Nexus has always been incredibly understanding. I’ve been given additional paid leave for key fostering responsibilities like Panel meetings, annual reviews, and training. There have also been times when I’ve had to work from home, leave early, or take emergency time off and Nexus has never made me feel anything but supported.”

Julie also spoke about the importance of a compassionate management team. “My managers have always been approachable and easy to talk to. Knowing I can be honest about my circumstances and will be met with empathy is so important.”

Fostering friendly in action

With Nexus now formally recognised as a Fostering Friendly employer, Julie says it’s more than just a label, it’s a reflection of the company’s values.

“I think it’s amazing. As a fostering agency, Nexus already understands the commitment fostering requires, so to see that recognition extend into workplace policy is just brilliant. Over the years, I’ve witnessed some fantastic changes that have made it even easier to balance both roles. It means a lot to know that my personal life as a foster carer is respected and actively supported by my employer.”

Why more employers should join the movement

“I genuinely believe more employers should become Fostering Friendly. Fostering is such a vital role, and there are so many children in need of safe, loving homes. But for many people, the thought of giving up a stable job is a real barrier. Not everyone can rely on fostering as a sole source of income, so having an employer who understands and accommodates your responsibilities as a carer can make all the difference.”

Advice for working foster carers

For anyone thinking about fostering while working full-time, Julie offers some realistic yet encouraging advice.

“There’s a lot to consider. Between meetings, social worker visits, PEPs, reviews, and school holidays, you really do need a strong support network. Flexibility from your employer is key, and it helps if your partner (if you have one) also has some flexibility so you can share the responsibilities.”

But despite the challenges, she says the rewards far outweigh them. “It’s so worth it. Working while fostering can actually be really beneficial for the child too, it shows them a healthy balance and a real-life example of working hard while being present for them. It helps create a sense of normality.”

What foster carers need most at work

When it comes to the kind of support foster carers need from their workplace, Julie keeps it simple: understanding and flexibility.

“Fostering is unpredictable. Things can change at short notice, and having a workplace that recognises that, without judgment, is invaluable. Just knowing that your employer is behind you can relieve so much pressure.”

At Nexus Fostering, we’re committed to supporting our team, not just as professionals, but as people. Whether it’s offering flexibility, understanding emergencies, or changing policies to reflect real-life needs, we’re proud to be a place where foster carers like Julie can thrive, both at home and at work.
