A call for more foster carers across Thetford, Lowestoft, and West Norfolk to tackle urgent shortage

Urgent need for more foster carers across Thetford, Lowestoft, and West Norfolk

Nexus Fostering calls for more foster carers across Thetford, Lowestoft, and West Norfolk.

Nexus Fostering in Anglia is calling on compassionate members of the public across Thetford, Lowestoft, King's Lynn, and West Norfolk to come forward and consider becoming foster carers, as the region faces a growing shortage of foster carers needed to help support and care for vulnerable children and young people.

With more children entering the care system and too few foster carers available locally, Nexus Fostering is urging individuals, couples, and families from all walks of life to take the first step in changing a young person’s life — and potentially their own.

“There are children right here in our communities who urgently need someone to stand by them, to listen, and to care,” said Leanne Austin from Nexus Fostering. “We’re seeing a real gap in foster care availability across Thetford, Lowestoft, and West Norfolk, and we’re appealing to those who have space in their homes and hearts to step forward.”

A Time of Growing Need

The lack of local foster carers means many children are being placed far from their home communities, schools, and support networks. By becoming a foster carer locally, individuals can help keep children rooted in familiar surroundings and support their sense of stability and identity.

Foster carers receive full training, dedicated support 24/7, and a generous allowance. But most importantly, they become a pivotal figure in a child’s life — someone who offers safety, trust, and the opportunity to thrive.

Real Impact, Real Rewards

Foster care comes in many forms, ranging from short-term to long-term placements, and includes supporting sibling groups, teenagers, and parent-child arrangements. Nexus Fostering is particularly keen to hear from people in the Thetford, Lowestoft, and West Norfolk areas who can open their homes.

“You don’t need to be a superhero, just someone who cares,” said Leanne, “We’ve seen again and again how everyday people become life-changing role models through fostering.”
