Q & A - Alex, a P&C carer

Published on: 2018-06-19 11:30:00

Please introduce yourself!
My name is Alex and I foster with my 1-year-old son Linus.

How many placements have you been involved with?
I am currently on my first placement.

How did you get into Parent and Child fostering?
Through my own situation.

If you could describe P&C fostering in 3 words, what would they be?
Time consuming, rollercoaster and rewarding.

What are the main challenges this type of placement brings?

  • Absent partner/extended family
  • Emotional upset
  • Hormonal changes/moods
  • Baby health concerns/worries
  • Lots of meetings and contact (emotional communication)

What are the main ways you think this type of placement helps a parent/family?
It gives help, support, and space to the parents, so they can find the core issues and address them.

What is your fondest memory from one of your placements, or a particular success story you would like to share?
When the Mummy turned around and said to me “I love my room here and feel so comfortable here. I hope I am a good Mum like you are.”

Why did you choose to foster with us?
Primarily it was your Ofsted rating of excellence and then the wonderfully helpful and friendly staff.

How have we supported you in your fostering journey?
I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive group of people throughout my fostering journey. I feel incredibly lucky to be supported, looked after and most of all fully protected by the whole Nexus team.

What is the main message you would like to get across to someone who is learning about fostering for the first time?
Although it may sound daunting and challenging, it’s also very rewarding and can be amazing fun. It also gives you opportunities to learn a lot about yourself as you go along the journey.

Alex is a new foster carer, and is enjoying the challenge! Could you join her? Call us on 0800 389 0143.
