My fostering experience - Vanessa

Published on: 2017-12-22 08:54:00

Hi, myself and my husband Steve have been fostering since May 2016. Between us we have 5 children. We still felt we had so much to offer as a family, so we turned to fostering.

We have only had 1 placement, and he is here forever. When C arrived, I nervously opened the door to a skinny 9yr old little boy. Very polite, very nervous, and wanting to please. We have hit many bumps in the road, but we have a great family and the support we receive gets us through the tough times, as well as enjoy and celebrate the good times together.

Receiving help, through training, in understanding a child such as C has been invaluable and shown us that he needs us to parent him in a very different way than we did our birth children…

If I am honest, to begin with I was a little sceptical of the ways to respond to C’s behaviour, but in time and putting what we have learnt into practise, I can tell you IT WORKS… and we have been converted to the methods we have learned. With help from Peter Littleford, our social worker Belinda, and the team at Nexus Fostering, C has the best opportunity to have the start in life he truly deserves.

Nexus Fostering have been, and are, simply fantastic. When we joined, it was quite a small team and you got to know everyone. So, if you ever need to talk to someone you can put a face to a name which for me is very important.

The team has expanded within the last couple of months, but I don’t feel this has had any negative impact on us. We feel that the support isn’t just for Steve and I, it also extends to our birth children, and when they find it tough they can be included in supervision and it really does help.

Becoming a foster carer was a huge decision for us as a family and a lot of thought went into it, but I can honestly say that it is one of the best decisions I/we have ever made.

It is one of the hardest things I have done, but also one of the most rewarding things I/we have ever done and to give a child a loving family to grow up in and to give them the best you can, as every child deserves this, and I am honoured that I/we can offer this within our family.

The benefits of fostering…. Well I guess the progress that has been made with C. The little lad that came to live with us and the boy we have now… the difference is immense. To do it the best you can, you have to be open to help and advice - even after having 3 children of my own and 2 step children I certainly didn’t know everything!
