Fostering Careers in Barnet

Could You Become A Foster Carer In Barnet?

When you decide to start a career in fostering, you may have a lot of questions and may feel you need support. That is where we come in. Nexus Fostering will be there to guide you throughout the entire fostering process, from your initial interest to your first placement and beyond.

We ensure that you never feel alone in your fostering career. We understand the pressures and difficulties you may face and are more than prepared to help you deal with them. As a Nexus carer, you will be offered all of the following support and more:

  • Your own assigned social worker who will visit you frequently and call you regularly
  • Experienced local staff members available to your 24/7
  • Regular support groups
  • Access to outreach workers
  • Family activities where you can meet other carers
  • Regular monthly supervision with experienced staff

Your skills as a foster carer will always be growing with us as you attend training sessions and talk with other carers at our social events, therefore your confidence and ability will always be growing too.

So now you know you always have someone to fall back on with Nexus, what else can we offer you? All of our carers receive the following:

  • A fostering allowance from £357 to £819 per week
  • Extra payments for birthdays and holidays
  • 14 days of paid respite per year

If that’s not enough to convince you that Nexus is the fostering agency for you, take a look at what our existing carers have to say about us:

“There have been lots of training days to attend. Also carer support groups have been helpful. Our link worker is a valuable source of information and is always on hand for help and support. It is nice to have 24-hour support if you need it from the duty worker” – Foster Carers Tina & Richard

"Support has been consistently very good from all members of Staff. Any questions/queries have been answered and dealt with quickly and efficiently, no matter how small or large" – Andrea

Not only do our carers have great things to say about us but we have been rewarded ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating for the care and support we provide.

How can you identify whether you would make a good foster carer or not?

At Nexus, we realise that there is no ‘one size fits all’ type of person who makes a good carer. We have carers from a wide variety of backgrounds and we do not discriminate against anyone who wants to foster. There are a handful of minimum requirements and additional preferred skills to become a foster carer:

Minimum Requirements:

  • You must have a spare bedroom for the foster child to stay in
  • You must be available to care for your foster child 24/7

Preferred skills

  • Experience caring for children
  • Ability to drive and access to a car, depending on your location

Other than the above, we are quite flexible with who we accept as a foster carer. As far as your personality goes, you should be a caring and understanding person with a sense of empathy for the foster child. You will need a good sense of humour and to be prepared for your patience to be tested. You should be tolerant and prepared to teach your foster child about a positive way of living. If you have these qualities, you may be the perfect role model and foster carer for our young people.
