Numbers of teenagers in care

Published on: 2017-11-21 10:00:00

According to the Office for National Statistics* (ONS), the number of children entering care in 2016-20917 who were aged 10-15 years old was 9,390, or 29% of all children in care.

This is the largest demographic of children coming into care.

Fostering is often associated with younger children, but this data shows a significant number of young people need your help too.

The Fostering Network calculates that over 7,000 families are needed throughout the UK and that 60% of children currently in care are teenagers.

Moving to those who are over 16, the number is 5,640 (13%). These teens are in need of care and support just as much as younger children, yet we know they are not the age group people think of when they imagine fostering.

Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network said:

A child comes into care in need of a foster family every 20 minutes in the UK. I would encourage anyone thinking about fostering to come forward, because there are so many more teenagers out there who need a secure home environment to help them stabilise their lives and move forward.
